2018 SW Division Conference: Application to Perform
Colleagues,

As mentioned in Kansas City, the 2018 SW Division conference dates are March 21-24, 2018, on the campus of the University of Houston. I know Matthew McInturf and David Clemmer are working diligently to plan a wonderful conference for our division.

For those universities interested in applying to perform, electronic submissions are due by 5:00 p.m. on Monday, May 15, 2017. Once the juried review process has concluded, invited groups will be notified via email on or before Friday, June 16. Those directors interested in submitting recordings should email me directly ASAP stating their intent to apply. I will then send a follow-up email outlining the application process, complete with detailed instructions for uploading audio files to a secure server.

I will convene a panel to review the recordings (void of university identification) and pass along the jury's recommendations to Matthew McInturf for selection. Please note the following requirements before submitting an application:

-Download and complete the application form and procedures on the CBDNA website (http://cbdna.org/cgi-bin/div_conf.pl?sw) or conference home page (http://www.cbdnahouston.com)
-Only unedited, live concert recordings from the current (2016-17) academic year will be accepted.
-Total length of recordings should be 30-45 minutes and include musical variety.
-Statement of intent to fiscally support the ensemble's performance at UH must accompany the application. This agreement must be signed by a designated university administrative official (i.e., Dept. Chair, Dean, Provost, etc.).

Should additional questions arise, please do not hesitate to contact me. Further conference information will be forthcoming as specific plans are finalized.

Wishing you a wonderful conclusion to the spring semester!

2016 SW Division Conference
Colleagues,

Greetings from Waco! I hope this message finds you successfully completing final concerts and end-of-semester activities. It was a pleasure seeing many of you in Nashville and I look forward to serving the Southwestern Division of CBDNA in the coming years. Once again, I would like to thank Steve Davis for his outstanding leadership during the last two years and we appreciate his friendship and dedicated service to our lives and profession.

As mentioned in Nashville, the 2016 SW Division conference dates are March 16-19, 2016, on the picturesque campus of the University of Colorado in Boulder. I appreciate the gracious commitment and support of Don McKinney and his colleagues to host this event and know it will be planned and executed in hospitable and efficient fashion.

For those universities interested in applying to perform, electronic submissions will be accepted until Friday, May 8, 2015. Once the juried review process has concluded, invited groups will be notified via email on or before Friday, May 22. Those directors interested in submitting recordings should email me directly ASAP stating their intent to apply. I will then send a follow-up email outlining the application process, complete with detailed instructions for uploading audio files to a secure server.

In previous years, though not required in the bylaws, the outgoing division president has graciously agreed to oversee the selection process. However, this year, Steve Davis will spend 35 days in Australia "working" (what a rough life, Steve). :-) Therefore, I will convene a panel to review the recordings (void of university identification) and make recommendations for selection. Please note the following requirements before submitting an application:

-Only unedited, live concert recordings from the current (2014-15) academic year will be accepted.
-Total length of recordings should be 30-45 minutes and include musical variety.
-Statement of intent to fiscally support the ensemble's performance at CU-Boulder must accompany the application. This agreement must be signed by a designated university administrative official (i.e., Dept. Chair, Dean, Provost, etc.).

Should additional questions arise, please do not hesitate to contact me. Further conference information will be forthcoming as specific plans are finalized.

Finally, please be on the lookout for a future email from Tom Verrier regarding the SW Division Vice-Presidential election. Please take time to read candidates' materials and vote in an expeditious manner. In closing, I thank Caroline Beatty (Texas State Univ.) and Chris Knighton (Univ. of Arkansas) for their willingness to run for this opportunity to serve in a more formal role.

Best wishes for a great conclusion to the semester!

2014 Conference and more
April 5, 2013

Southwest Division of the CBDNA Colleagues,

I write with thankfulness in your trust of me to serve both you and the organization as president of our terrific region over the next two years. I am excited to serve! I would be remiss not to mention Sarah McKoin in thanking her for her outstanding leadership over the last two years! Bravo, Sarah!

Many are wondering, I am sure, about the 2014 regional conference. I am extraordinarily thankful to Chris Knighten and W. Dale Warren for their willingness to host the conference at the University of Arkansas – Fayetteville. Join me in showing our appreciation for taking on such an enormous and selfless endeavor.

The title of the conference is Collaborations. If applying to perform, which I strongly encourage everyone to do, please consider a program that highlights the title of the conference. Be it working with a composer directly, or any other kind of collaborative thoughts, ideas and creativity are welcome. Dancers, visual artists, poets, video, theater, or any other connections would be welcome. Any time we can increase our sphere of influence by collaborating with other significant artists it only helps strengthen our reputation as a laudable art form. Dream big, take risks! Of course, this is not a mandate, only an encouragement, so that the conference is consistent in its theme.

This year, the conference will add an intercollegiate band. Matthew McInturf, in his role as Vice President, will coordinate all of the details for the event. Look for direct communication from Matthew in the coming weeks and months. Thank you, Matthew!

If you are interested in submitting a request to present a lecture or poster at the conference, please share your ideas directly with Tim Oliver. Tim serves the CBDNA as a member of the National Research Committee, and will, in consultation with me, give consideration to presentations and posters that have a direct connection to the theme of the conference. You and your students are encouraged to submit. Thank you for your leadership, Tim!

There will be a website for the conference, up and running, by May first. Visit it regularly! The address will be communicated directly to each of you in an email upon launch.

Lastly, I would encourage everyone to clear your calendars for attendance at the conference. Additionally, your terrific students are encouraged to attend! I believe that our division is filled with outstanding artists and leaders. Let us each make it a priority to involve the younger generation as well. Music is an apprenticeship art form – passed on from generation to generation. These future leaders need exposure to our mentoring as a community of engaging artists so that they can feel included and inspired by our organization.

There will be more coming soon, I am certain. Look over the attachment – it has specific details regarding the upcoming conference.

Again, thank you for your trust. I assure everyone that my commitment and effort will be consistent with the requisite needs.

Have a wonderful end to the academic year!

Best,

Steve
